Joe William Mayes, 73, of Indianapolis passed away on Sunday, July 3rd, 2016 at his home. He was born on September 28th, 1942 in Belton, KY to the late J.W and Joenell Mayes.

Aside from his loving parents, Joe is preceded in death by his two brothers, Ronnie Mayes and Paul Coolman.

Joe graduated from Decatur Central High School in 1961. After high school he enlisted in the United States Navy where he served his country  faithfully in Vietnam. When his tour of duty ended he returned home to start his own family. He provided for his family by working as an electrician for General Motors for many years. Among his many achievements; he was a Past Commander of the VFW 1120 from 2003-2004, a member of the American Legion Post 276, and a member of the Eagles and Moose Lodge.

He is survived by his loving daughter, Kimberly S. ( Victor) Pena; his brother Bennie Mayes (Claudia); his two sisters, Carolyn Sue (Don) Noah, and Mary Jane (Mike) Mayes; his three grandchildren, Miranda Smith, Eli Atayde and Maleya Atayde; and his two great grandchildren, Ethan and Braidon Brown. Joe is also survived by numerous extended family and close friends.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 10th, 2016 at Fountain Square Cremation & Funeral Services ( 1420 Prospect Street, Indianapolis, IN 46203).

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the American Legion, VFW or a charity of the donors choice.
