Robert “Bob” L. Jump, 86, of Indianapolis, passed away on Wednesday, December 12, 2018.
Bob was born in Louisville, KY on February 26, 1932 to the late Samuel Jump and Ida (Kellums) Jump. After graduating Tech High School in 1950 he went on to get his Bachelors in General Science and Industrial Arts from Purdue University, graduating in 1955 with a teacher certification also. He taught at Seymour High School from 1955-1956 before getting drafted in the US Army.
Bob was a track and field star, especially the high hurdles. His talent had earned him a scholarship to Purdue. During his tenure in the U.S. Army as a Preventative Medicine Specialist, Bob received experience in environmental health, mosquito control, water quality assurance, and food protection programs. Stationed in Orleans, France, Bob also ran hurdles on the Army's Intramural Team.
When he left the Army in 1958, his experience got him hired at the Indiana State Board of Health as a Manufactured Food Specialist where he advanced to the position of Division Training Officer in 1963. In 1969, Bob was appointed Chief of the Survey and Training Section and charged with the state-wide responsibility of evaluating local health department food programs and training food protection personnel. In 1993, Bob was promoted to Director, Division of Retail Foods, and was responsible for the state retail food program. In 1996, the additional responsibility of the Wholesale Food Program (excluding meat and milk) was placed under his direction.
He earned his Masters Degree in Public Health, from Indiana University in 1973. This included training in public health statistics, environmental health science and epidemiology, etc. For 5 years, Bob served as a guest lecturer and part-time faculty member at IUPUI where he taught various aspects of food technology.
Bob was a Registered Environmental Health Specialist and an active member in several professional organizations. Bob was a past President of the Indiana Environmental Health Association. After Bob's appointment by Governor Bowen in 1973, he served as a member and secretary for the State Board of Registration until 1983. Bob was a Diplomat in the American Academy of Sanitarians, an organization whose members are recognized for their outstanding environmental health achievements.
In 1987, Bob was a recipient of the "Tim Sullivan Memorial Award" in recognition of his knowledge and outstanding contribution to food program operations in Indiana.
In 1998, Bob retired from the Indiana State Board of Health and was also awarded the prestigious "Sagamore of the Wabash" by Governor Frank O'Bannon.
Bob was very involved in the community, he was a member of the Indiana Stamp Society in the 60s, 70s and 80s. He was a member of the Indianapolis Mustang Club, a member of the Indy GTO Association, and he was a member of the American Legion Post #155.
Bob was very frugal but he never took anything for granted. He was stubborn, but compassionate. He quietly helped others, without being boastful or flashy about it. He was a loving son, father, grandfather, and brother.
Bob is survived by his wife of 45 years, Reba Jump; his children John Jump, Gary Jump, Michele Jump, and Ronnie Nix; and his numerous grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Bob is preceded in passing by his first wife, Renee; his son Charlie Nix; and his brothers Bill Jump and David Jump.
Funeral Services for Bob will be 12 PM, Monday, December 17, 2018 at Fountain Square Cremation & Funeral Services. Visitation will be from 3-6 PM, Sunday, December 16, 2018 at the Funeral Home. Burial with full military honors will follow Monday’s Services at Crown Hill Cemetery.
