Phillip “Phil” Jay Boling, 70, of Avon, formerly of Greenfield, passed away on November 15, 2024.
Born in Greenfield, Indiana, on October 20, 1954, to Walter and Charlotte (Murray) Boling, Phil was a proud Purdue University graduate with a degree in education. A lifelong Purdue basketball fan, he also loved rooting for the Indiana Pacers. Known affectionately as “Dr. Phil” due to his resemblance to the famous TV personality, he was a man of routine, reliability, and kindness. Fridays meant Panda Express, and classic rock—especially Chicago—was always playing in the background. Easygoing and approachable, Phil’s favorite pastime was being with those he loved.
Phil was a deeply involved father. He coached his son’s soccer teams, participated in Boy Scouts, and took his son to the gun range on occasion. With his daughters, he embraced their interests wholeheartedly, whether it meant helping them pick out makeup or singing along to the “Grease” soundtrack every morning on the way to school. A man who was always thinking of others, he started a tradition of playing movies in the family van for his children and the neighborhood kids while they waited for the school bus.
Phil’s heart was open to all, earning him the title of “everyone’s dad.” He frequently took his kids to concerts, loved spending time with family pets (his “grandpups”), and always found joy in the simple pleasures of life. His kindness and sweet soul touched everyone he met, and he will be deeply missed.
Phil is survived by his children, Libby Boling, Kierstyn Boling (Lars Miller), and Mitchell Boling; the mother of his children, Kathy Boling; close friend Elaine Smith; siblings Bruce Boling (Nancy) and Kathy Baughman (John); nieces and nephews Sarah, Joanna, Matt, Susan, and Bridget; and his three grandpups.
He was preceded in passing by his parents, Walter and Charlotte Boling.
