Martin Hodapp Obituary

The graveside for Martin has been postponed, the celebration at the VFW is still on.

Martin L Hodapp, 78, of Indianapolis, departed this world on Friday, January 5, 2024. A native of Indianapolis, born to Martin G and Madge (Allen) Hodapp on July 26, 1945, Martin's life resonated with the harmonies of music.

His musical prowess was nothing short of remarkable, influencing every note of his existence. Achieving a Masters from Butler University, he passionately pursued a Doctorate until health intervened. Martin's dedication to music extended beyond personal enrichment; he shared his knowledge at IU, Marian University, and IUPUI, leaving an indelible mark on aspiring musicians.

As Secretary Treasurer of the Musicians Union Local 3, Martin played a key role in the orchestration of the musical community. His talents carried him across the globe, performing with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and other renowned ensembles. Even when not on stage, Martin reveled in the melodies of life, often found in the audience at the Symphony.

Beyond the symphony hall, he found joy in simple pleasures. Weekends were incomplete without a pilgrimage to Costco, where he relished the symphony of flavors offered by free samples. Martin's weakness for good food was only matched by his love for socializing, often accompanied by a glass or two of wine.

Known for his unwavering determination and occasional ornery demeanor, Martin remained true to himself. Underneath the straightforward exterior was a man of genuine character, eschewing pretense for authenticity. He saw no reason to mince words, preferring the direct approach in life.

Martin leaves behind a rich composition of family: Diane, Gaylynn (Cregg), and David (Lydia); cousins Connie and Eugena; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and 12 great-great-grandchildren. Alongside the echoes of his musical journey, Martin is preceded in death by his wife of 43 years, Janet, who now joins him in the eternal symphony of life.

After his 1 PM Graveside at Concordia Cemetery on Saturday, January 13, 2024, friends and family are invited to the afterparty at VFW Post 2999, 3553 English Ave, Indianapolis, IN 46201, to celebrate Martin's life.
