James “Greg” Gregory Childers, 65, of Indianapolis, passed away late afternoon on June 10, 2025.
Greg was born in Indianapolis, IN on February 9, 1960, to James A. Childers and Bonnie J. (Carrico) Hazel.
Greg loved music—whether he was listening to it or playing it. He appreciated many genres, but '70s rock held a special place in his heart, with bands like Led Zeppelin and Steve Perry among his favorites. He was especially talented on the harmonica and could often be found playing in clubs when he was younger.
He started working at a young age, beginning as a hod carrier and bricklayer for Wilhelm. Over the years, he built a strong career in construction and proudly retired from the Indiana Laborers Union Local 120 of Indianapolis.
Greg had a playful, youthful spirit—he was like an overgrown kid. He loved fishing and never passed up a chance to go. Antiquing, garage sales, and hunting for lost treasures brought him joy, especially if cuckoo clocks or old guitars were involved. He collected and repaired vintage guitars, displaying them on the wall with pride. Greg was always working on a project, especially his truck, which he tinkered with constantly.
Above everything, Greg loved his family. He had a big heart and was always there for the people he cared about.
Greg is survived by his daughter Heather Childers; his four grandchildren; siblings Vicky Chapman, Michael (Bonnie) Childers, and Melissa Greene; several nieces and nephews; and his beloved dog Bella Rose, who was his constant companion and always by his side.
He is preceded in passing by his father James A. Childers; his mother Bonnie J. Hazel; his maternal grandparents Charles E. and Lucy Irene Carrico; his paternal grandparents James H. and Hallie O. Childers; and his oldest brother Randy Childers.
