Gerald Powell Obituary

Gerald Edward Powell, 62, of Indianapolis passed away on May 30, 2023

Gerald Edward Powell was born June 25, 1960 to Harold and Beverly Powell. Gerald grew up in Lock field Gardens and Haughville in Indianapolis. He loved to play basketball, and he made friends very easily.  He was well known in the neighborhood as “J Ball”, and didn’t know many strangers.

Gerald’s kind and loving nature followed him into his adult life. Although he became more reserved in his personal life, he always made time for his family and beloved grandchildren. After Graduating Washington High School, he worked a number of jobs, including a position at a juvenile detention center for troubled teens, and his longest position at Larue Carter Hospital. Gerald had a gift for working with kids. He knew that they were our future, and he often resonated with them. He had the care and patience needed to pass on his knowledge to future generations. Gerald has made a great impact on his family’s life as well as the people and children he worked with, and his legacy of care and compassion will live on through them. He will be deeply missed.

Gerald is survived by his mother; Beverly J. Powell, his children; Gerald Jr., Charity, Corey, and Keisha, his siblings; David, Dana, and Brian; and many nieces, nephews, and grandchildren.

Gerald is preceded in passing by the love of his life, Hope R. Powell, his father; Harold E. Powell; and his Grandparents, Gus and Alma Powell, George Corley and Mattie Corley.
