Clara Hizer Obituary

On December 20, 2023, we bid a fond farewell to a lady like no other, Clara Mae Hizer of Indianapolis, formerly of Huntsville, TN. Born on May 1, 1946, in the hills of Huntsville to Jess and Ellen Carpenter Smith, Clara lived her life with the spirit of a true country girl.

Clara embraced the great outdoors like a second home. She had a way of making even yard work interesting – mowing the "yarge" in her underwear when the sun got too fierce. Tending to her flower beds was her pride and joy, and if she spotted a wildflower she fancied on the side of the road, you can bet she'd pull over and dig it up. Clara had a green thumb that could turn any patch of dirt into a blooming masterpiece.

Birds held a special place in her heart. She'd spend hours watching them flit about and made sure to set up bird feeders to keep 'em coming back for more. A hard worker through and through, Clara faced life's challenges head-on – not even being struck by lightning twice or falling from a two-story building and breaking her back could slow her down.

Now, the woman may have had a terrible sense of direction (the family joked that the yard was fenced in so she wouldn't get lost), but she steered her grandkids down the winding roads of life fearlessly. Despite the validity of her driving license being somewhat questionable, she taught the next generation to navigate with a golf cart, even daring to take on main roads.

Clara was the very definition of a partner in crime. She'd load up all the kids and head to Brown County for days of laughter and memories. She was a true original, always up for an adventure, and she'll be sorely missed.

Clara leaves behind a legacy of love that spans generations. She is survived by her children Bruce, Mary, and Robert; grandchildren Carrie, Jamie, Jessie, Sara, Karlotta, Adam, Carly, Hailey, Mickensey, Porter, and Kyng; great-grandchildren Lil Jessie, Braeden, Destiny, Anthony, Leon, Kyndall, Kimberly, and Mallory; siblings Janice Chambers, Carl Smith, and Joe Smith; brother-in-law Bernard John McClellen; and a host of nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in passing by her parents, her husband Bruce Hizer, her children Robin and Tom, her grandson Brucy Jeffrey III, and her siblings Aline, Lester, Susie, Beaulah, and Ricky.
