Billy Johnson Obituary

Billy Ray Johnson, 82, of Indianapolis, formerly of Harlan, KY, passed away on June 19, 2024. Billy was born in Harlan, KY on October 16, 1941, to Margaret (Rednar) and Charlie Short. He spent many years working as a book binder in a printing company.

Billy’s love story with Joann began the moment he saw her. He confidently told his brother that he was going to marry her, despite his brother's skepticism. Fifty-five years later, their love remained as strong as ever, a testament to their deep bond, even though it took some convincing for Joann to go out with him initially. They shared every day together, including a period when they worked at the same company.

A gentle soul, Billy believed in resolving conflicts through calm discussion or taking a break to cool down. His passion for sports was evident in his enthusiastic support for the Cincinnati Reds and Bengals. In his youth, he was the star quarterback for Corbin High School's football team. Billy was also an avid bowler and enjoyed coaching little league for his kids and grandkids.

Billy cherished spending time with his family in any capacity, especially fishing. His positive outlook on life meant he rarely complained, except when his beloved wife wasn't by his side. Known for his charm and humor, he never met a stranger and had no enemies. His Bambi jokes will surely be remembered fondly by those who knew him.

Billy was a devoted husband, a dedicated father, and an exceptional grandpa and great-grandpa. His presence will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him.

He is survived by the love of his life, Joann; his children Tammy, Scott (Angie), and Stacy (Javier); his grandchildren Kristy (Harrison), Brittany (David), Tiffany (Ronnie), Ashley (Jordan), Brian, Brody, Gaby, and Adriana; his brother Chuck; his in-laws Linda, Shirley (Rick), Richard, and John (Carmen); the father of Tammy's children Brian; 9 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and numerous extended family members and friends.

Billy was preceded in passing by his parents, his great-grandson Kaiden, his brothers Michael and Bobbie, and siblings-in-law Wayne and Betty.
