Bessie Jewel Mathis, a cherished resident of Indianapolis and formerly of Kentucky, peacefully passed away on June 25, 2023. She was born on April 22, 1940, in Kentucky to General Lee and Mary Smiley. Bessie was a woman of simplicity, finding comfort in the familiarity of her home. While she often kept to herself, she cherished the moments spent with her beloved family and friends.
Bessie possessed a delightful sense of humor, brightening the lives of those around her with her quick wit and playful banter. Her laughter was contagious, bringing joy to those fortunate enough to share in her company.
A devout Christian, Bessie held a deep and unwavering faith in God. She was a faithful attendee of church services until the challenges posed by the Covid pandemic. Her commitment to her spiritual beliefs provided her with solace and guidance throughout her life.
Left to cherish her memory are her loving children: John Mathis, David Mathis, Steve Mathis, and Gerald Mathis. Her brother, Walter Smiley, also mourns her loss. Bessie leaves behind a legacy of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews, who will forever hold her dear in their hearts.
Bessie is preceded in passing by her parents, General and Mary Smiley; her daughter Kathleen Mathis; and her siblings Vera Clark, Edna Wilson, Lynn Smiley, and Willard Smiley, who she joins in eternal peace.
In this time of mourning, may we find solace in the memories we shared with Bessie. Let us remember her gentle spirit, her unwavering faith, and her genuine love for her family. Though she may no longer be physically present, her spirit will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
